     POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

AREA:                           Head Coach

 

REPORTS TO:              Activities Director

 

SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT:

Directs the program within policies set by the Montana High School Association, the Northwestern Divisional Class A, the Administration of Whitefish High School and the Activities Director of Whitefish High School.  Provides instruction to athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success.  At the same time, the student shall receive instruction that will lead to the formulation of moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline and self-confidence.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS;

  • Possesses high school diploma or its equivalent.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Montana teacher certification.
  • Employment as a teacher in Whitefish School District.
  • Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to):

  •  Participates as a member of Whitefish High School's Coaching Staff.
  • Reports directly to the Activities Director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in  conjunction with the high school principal.
  • Accountable to Activities Director, Principal and/or Superintendent.
  • Supervises a cohesive staff of high school assistant coaches in conjunction with the activities director and the respective principal.
  • Possesses previous coaching and/or competition experience.
  • Has a thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Whitefish Board of Trustees and is responsible for their implementation  by the entire staff of  the sports program.
  • Has knowledge of existing system, state and league regulations; implements same consistently and interprets them for staff.
  • Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels.
  • Is aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance.
  • Has the ability to complete NFHS Coaches Education Training on time.
  • Has the ability to complete MHSA Sport Specific Rules Clinic on time.
  • Has the ability to obtain a certified First Aid and CPR Card with training in AED (automated external defibrillator).
  • Ensures there is discipline on the bus.  Eating on bus should be monitored by coaches to ensure cleanliness.
  • Follows directives of activities director and/or administration as they pertain to being a part of   the Whitefish School District coaching staff.
  • Has the ability and is willing to organize and supervise a total sports program (k-12).
  • The head coach must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and at the same time must continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.

Staff Responsibilities:

  • Establishes the fundamental philosophy for the total program (k-12), skills and techniques to be taught by staff.  Designs staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of overall program (k-12).
  • Trains and informs staff, encourages professional growth by encouraging clinic attendance according to local policy.
  • Delegates specific duties, supervised implementation, and within two weeks following season’s end, analyzes staff effectiveness and evaluates all assistants.
  • Maintains discipline, adjusts grievances and works to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Performs such other duties which may be assigned by the activities director or principal.
  • Establishes and communicates clear policies to players and parents pertaining to operations and expectations of the total program (k-12)
  • Distributes appropriate handbooks and adheres to all policies therein.

Administrative Duties:

  • Assists the activities director in scheduling, providing transportation and requirements for tournament and special sport events.
  • Assists in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times.  Coordinates program with maintenance and school employees.
  • Provides documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, concussion awareness, random drug testing, parental consent and eligibility.
  • Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment site.
  • Advises the activities director and recommends policy, method or procedural changes.
  • Ensures all activity fees are paid before the first contest.
  • Ensure all athletes have insurance and physicals before their first practice.
  • Recommends assistant coaching assignments to activities director.
  • Completes inventory and year-end report forms annually at conclusion of season.

Responsibilities to Students:

  • Provides training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete who is considered a participant.
  • Gives constant attention to a student athlete’s grades and conduct.
  • By his/her presence at all practices, games and while traveling, provides assistance, guidance and safeguards for each participant.
  • Completes reports of all athletic injuries on proper forms and communicates with the athletic trainer immediately.

  • Directs student managers, assistants and statisticians.
  • Follows discipline procedures according to Student Activities Handbook.
  • Assists athletes in their college or advanced educational selection.
  • Distributes student activity handbook to athletes and ensures that sub-varsity coaches are doing the same.

Finance and Equipment:

  • Participates in the budget process with the activities director.  Recommends equipment guidelines as to type, style, color or technical specifications.  Is responsible for operating within budget appropriations.
  • Is accountable for all equipment and collects the cost of any equipment lost or not returned.  Arranges for issuing, storing and reconditioning of equipment and submits annual inventory and current records.
  • Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.  Properly marks and identifies all equipment before issuing or storing.  Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use.
  • Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games.  Reports any health and/or hygiene issues to Activities Coordinator.
  • Coach or designee should be last one out of locker room.  Secures all doors, lights, windows and locks before leaving building.

Public Relations:

  • Organizes parents, coaches, players and guests for parent meetings.
  • Promotes the sport within the school by recruiting athletes that are not participating in sports.
  • Promotes sports and/or program promotions outside the school through news media, little league programs or in any other publicity vehicle.
  • Ensures quality, effectiveness and validity of any oral or written release to local media.
  • Maintains good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers and fans.
  • Presents information to news media concerning game results.
  • Fosters a strong relationship with youth programs that feed the middle school and high school  programs.
  • Constantly visible and willing to help at youth events to offer input and oversight as needed for the overall success of the total program (k-12).

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions:

  • Persons performing service in this position will exert 10 to 50 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • This type of work involves walking, standing, and sitting for extended periods of time as required by situations of job position.
  • Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral and written information, the manual dexterity to move related equipment, and the skills necessary to handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Contracted on seasonal basis.
  • Remuneration established by Master Agreement.
  • Serves at pleasure of the School Board.
  • Should Board decide to release from assignment, remuneration will be prorated on a daily basis of regular season.
